Multichoice Ghana Supports Ebola Education

MultiChoice Ghana recently donated boxes of Multichoice Africa Ebola awareness playing cards to the Ghana Health and Education Initiative (GHEI) as part of its corporate social initiative.

The cards are to help the GHEI with their mission to empower communities to take charge of their health and educate young people who will lead their communities out of poverty.

The cards, which serve as regular deck cards, are also a medium of education about Ebola and are intended to spark discussion amongst the people who are playing the game. Each card carries an easy-to-understand message and an appropriate graphic that illustrates that message.

The GHEI is an NGO located in Bibiani in the Western Region of Ghana, near the Ivory Coast border, and is dedicated to helping drive Ghana towards a future where children—free from illness and illiteracy—can realize their full potential, one where healthy, educated young people will lead their communities out of poverty. Their health and education programs work hand-in-hand to achieve this vision.

The GHEI also recruit, train, and employ people directly from the communities where they work. The programs they run include Malaria Prevention, Hand Washing with Soap campaigns, Sexual and Reproductive Health education campaigns, Early Childhood Literacy, Girls’ Education and Empowerment and so much more.

Speaking at the presentation, Mr. Cecil Sunkwa-Mills, the General Manager for MultiChoice Ghana acknowledged the work of the GHEI and congratulated them for their part in educating people in the rural areas of Ghana about the Ebola virus.

He commended the hand washing campaign as one of the key ways to not only rid us of other dangerous communicable diseases but also the Ebola virus. He stated that he hope that cards would be used by the NGO to educate children and adults alike about the Ebola virus.

He promised that MCG will do all it can to help GHEI achieve its vision. He referred to the fact that MultiChoice Africa has also produced an educational video that highlights the threats Ebola poses and the preventive measures that need to be taken. This video is being broadcast on all our platforms to disseminating information about Ebola and aiding the fight to stop its spread.

Mr. Enock Nkrumah from the GHEI who received the items on behalf of his team stated that they will ensure that the cards are used effectively and he believed it would be of tremendous help to the students in the communities they work.

Mr. Charlie Goldstein, Communications Officer for the team thanked MultiChoice Ghana for their support and donation and congratulated MultiChoice for their on-going work towards helping to make Ebola a thing of the past in Ghana.

As a business, MultiChoice is conscious of its responsibility to sustain the social and economic development of Ghanaians and support other social initiatives including the MultiChoice Resource Centers (MRC), a programme which provides schools with the latest digital satellite technology and gives them access to content on seven premium educational television channels through the DStv Education bouquet.

MultiChoice Ghana has currently invested in 73 Ghanaian High Schools by donating fully installed DStv HDPVR decoders and television sets to the schools. Ten schools are provided with the MRC facility yearly and two (2) teachers from each of the selected school are trained on the use of the equipment.

The DStv Eutelsat Star Awards, an essay writing and poster designing competition open to high school students between the ages of fourteen (14) and nineteen (19) in forty-two (42) African countries, seek to inspire innovative thinking among high school students in Africa, to create awareness on how science and technology can be applied to everyday life, and also to showcase the many ways that satellites impact on the development of the African continent.

Also, MultiChoice Ghana have supported the Community Bee level of the Spelling Bee Competition, which is organized by the Young Educators Foundation, a local NGO dedicated to improving education in Ghana for four successive years. Vishal Mukesh Thakwani came first in the 2014/2015 National Spelling Bee and will represent Ghana at the USA Scripps Spelling Bee.
