The Unsuccessful Beginning of University Of Ghana Nursing Students

Vincent Owusu Appiah is a level 400 BSc Nursing student at the University of Ghana (Legon). He is the second born of his parent’s five children and hails from Obuasi in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. To become a medical doctor and a philanthropist are what the young man dreams to achieve in future.
Madam Mary Appiah is the mother of Vincent. She is a regular trader in Obuasi Market but does everything in her power to make sure her five children attain the best of education in life. Very smart and brilliant young girl, Madam Mary did not get the support from her parents to further her education, hence, ended up selling in the market. This, she does not want any of her children to experience, so, she fights to the extreme to give them all the education they want.

Enrolled at Tutuga Methodist Primary School, brilliant Vincent had his dreams at the back of his mind, so, he studied restlessly and passed out with aggregate 13 in August 2000; climaxing as the best results the school had ever evoked. He later continued to Obuasi Secondary Technical to pursue Science as a course.
His enthusiasm towards studying changed drastically during his secondary school education as a science student. He was peer pressured and did not have time for his books. Passionate about football and a very good player at that, Vincent thought of becoming a footballer instead. He misused all his study hours to play soccer and failed brutally when his SSSCE results came in 2003.
Vincent could not further his education into the tertiary institution with his failed results. “I knew my preparation towards the examination was not equipped, so, I didn’t even want to register for the exams because I knew my results wouldn’t come out successfully. My mother and my other siblings were all very disappointed in me. This is because though I am not from a wealthy family, I must admit that we are blessed with intelligence”
“My mother then proposed that I go back to secondary school because she felt enrolling me into a remedial school would do me more harm than good; due to my passion for football. I declined to her suggestion because I couldn’t stand the embarrassment, especially, to be in uniform again for my colleagues to see me”
Knowing that all his colleagues were enrolled into tertiary institutions, Vincent felt rejected and took an advice a friend gave him and applied for a six months course in Air Ticketing and Reservation at the Global School of Aviation in Kumasi. Even though the school fees was very expensive, his mother didn’t hesitate to strive to get some money to register him when Vincent told her about his plan.
Graduating in July 2005, Vincent got employed as a Ticketing officer at Westlife Travel and Tour in Kumasi but resigned from the low salary paid. “Looking at where I stayed and where the work was, I spent all my salary on transportation since the pay wasn’t good and again, they refused to pay us. So, the workers started leaving and I also did same and returned to Obuasi”
Life in Obuasi became unbearable, being jobless and difficult to further his education with his poor SSSCE results, Vincent decided to go into teaching. On the day of his job interview, there was a miracle. “I met qualified and professional teachers who were all present for the same job interview and that got me intimidated. But I decided to give it a try since I had taught before I enrolled in the Aviation school. Every one present was given 30minutes to teach but I was asked to stop when I had only spent 15minutes. We were all asked to go and that we would receive a call later. I didn’t even get to the entrance of the school and I received a call from the proprietor to return. He told me that he stopped me because I was the right person he was looking for despite my poor results. So, I got employed at Abusco Royal International School in Obuasi ‘one of the best schools’ and taught english”
The proprietor of the school realised how dedicated, hardworking and intelligent Vincent was, so he advised him to register for the November/December Private West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) to better his grades and further his education.
He took the advice and registered for Nov/Dec examination in 2006 but failed all the three subjects he wrote. He didn’t give up. He went in for the second time the following year and failed all subjects registered. In 2008, he again registered for three subjects and passed only in the English language. Though he failed in almost all his SSSCE papers, Vincent thought writing in bits would help him reduce much stress and also help him pass the exams well. But he kept failing.
As determined as Vincent had become, he didn’t give up but registered again in 2009.  He failed to write the exams because he knew he would fail.
In the mid-2011 when Vincent was about 25yrs, he woke up one night with the dream of going back to secondary school when some of his colleagues from secondary school had already completed from their various universities, whiles, some of the pupils he had taught had also entered into various universities including his younger brother.
“I was asleep one night and my dreams of becoming a medical doctor kept pestering me. I woke up the next morning with a ten year plan to become a medical doctor. So, I overlooked shyness and resigned from my teaching job and got admitted in (Form 2) at Angel Educational Complex in Kumasi. I almost used all the money I had gained from teaching to pay for my fees and extra classes. I was very determined and nothing could stop me. I met one of my juniors in secondary school who had become a teacher in the school and sat in the same class with some of the pupils I taught in Abusco Royal International School”
For the two weeks that Vincent spent in his new class, one of the teachers was very convinced with his performance and took him to the headmaster to promote him to (Form3). The teacher believed Vincent’s performance was better off to sit for WASSCE, so, together with the proprietor, he was promoted to (Form3) and wrote his final exams in 2012.
It was a joyous moment when Vincent passed the WASSCE with 6As and 2Bs and got admitted to pursue BSc Nursing at the University of Ghana (Legon). Currently in Level 400, Vincent, who will turn 30 in September, still remains a first class student and he is also the incumbent president of the University of Ghana Nursing Students Association.
He plans to further his education into the graduate medical education after graduation.
To Vincent, his mother has been the greatest part of his success and expressed gratefulness to Mr and Mrs Abu Bonsra – owners of Abusco Royal International School for supporting him financially in the tertiary institution. What is your story? #MotivateGhana

#MotivateGhana: Meet The University Students Storming Accra With Their Delicious Bread

As students of the University of Ghana (Legon), Kingleys Darkey a level 300 Business Administration student, Kumi Richard a level 300 Political Science and Adult Education student and Kofi Tenkorang a graduate, have taken some parts of Accra by storm with their delicious PBM Breads.

PBM Bakery is an abbreviation for Patience Baah Mensah, aunt to Richard Kumi, who has for the past seven years locally been baking all varieties of bread that are mainly seen on the market domain which includes popular ones like the sugar, butter and tea bread.

Among her breads are also the Soya, Coconut and Banana Bread that are made of natural fruits.

Friends from Presec Legon, the trio have taken PBM Bread as a business and transformed the naturally made fruit bread into a suitable and presentable bread ready for the market. “As students we wanted to create a job for ourselves on campus but we didn’t have the necessary resources. So we came across aunty Patience Soya, Coconut and Banana Bread and we decided to add our skills, knowledge and time to it. We branded, packaged and went out to look for customers”

Joining PBM Bakery in early 2014, the young guys have stormed areas like Legon and Madina with their delicious and healthy Soya, Coconut and Banana Bread. Their unique bread has won the hearts of many personalities including Talk Show host and comedian, Kwaku Sintim Misa (KSM) and hosts of This Morning Show on Viasat 1 - Patrice Amegashie and Kokui Selormey.

According to the three besties, their passion to cook has driven them to a better path of their business even though they are still in school. “We have always wanted to do stuff relating to food and when the opportunity came we didn’t hesitate to grasp it. We added importance and class to the PBM brand”.

They lamented on some of the challenges they faced during the beginning of their bread business. “We heard all sort of funny comments on campus just to ridicule us of what we had been up to but that didn’t deter us from our passion. It was not about their comments but our passion and determination pressed us to continue with the business.”

“Business has been good and our clients keep increasing every now and then since we joined and re branded the whole thing. Also some friends who mocked us during the beginning now congratulate us for a good initiative” Kinsley praised.

To them, combining business and education hasn’t been easy but they are able to do so as a result of proper time management.

Currently with two employees, they look forward to extend their clientele base both on the local and international market.

BPM Soya, Coconut and Banana Bread can be purchased at East Legon Shell, Legon Shell, West Lands Fresh Foods, Haatso Total, B Mart, West Legon, Oando Legon, Tablets Xtra and Atomic Junction.

Don Jazzy Reveals the Secret to Hits Songs

Nigeria's super star music producer Don Jazzy is noted for the magic behind many hit songs from the Mavin Records’ camp. He has being the mastermind behind most of their greatest hits as a musician and producer. From "Dorobuchi" to "Adeobi".

Don Jazzy born  Michael Collins Ajereh, who is a Nigerian multi award-winning record producer, singer-songwriter, musician, former CEO of Mo' Hits Records and current CEO of Mavin Records in a recent interview with City People magazine, revealed the secret behind his hit songs.

When asked if he has the Midas touch, the "Collabo" featured artiste replied saying he doesn’t know about the Midas touch but he understand the market.

In his own words he says:

“I don’t know about the Midas touch, but I think what it is, is that, I understand the market first. I also understand people to a large extent. The common problem with people in the industry is not really understanding the individuals they deal with; either the artiste or their staffs. I run a very beautiful organization where everyone is friend. We are family. I don’t come and start using veto power because I am the boss. The greatest idea might come from the little guy there. So I listen to everybody and it works. As for music I try to experiment sometimes but I don’t go out of the box to say I want to over experiment in a way that it is not what people want. If it is akara that you want to sell, it’s the akara that you will sell. You don’t have to start putting jam inside akara. Then it’s not akara anymore. It is something else. The least you can do is to put small pepper to taste. You cannot now go over outside the box and say you want to put your name on top of the akara and stuffs like that. Over the years there has been the kind of music Nigerians like. This is the kind of music my mother and my father dances to and their friends too, then we just stick to the formula and it works for us.”

Don Jazzy has being the brains behind the success story of Dbanji (a Nigerian Musician) which led to the formation of Mo' Hits Records but later desolved due to some misunderstandings bewteen himself and Djanji.

He later went ahead to form The Mavin Records which includes super stars like Tiwa Savage who recently gave birth to beautiful baby, Dr. SID whose wife also recently delivered a birth, D - Prince whose girlfriend also delivered a beautiful baby as well.

Why I am against the doctors strike - KSM writes

My position on the the strike has been firm. I am against it. Of course it has come with a price. Descriptions like, "ignorant comedian" are among the very charitable statements that have come out.

It is true though, I may be ignorant of the history of the doctor's grievances and so that can make "simple-minded" and "naive" people like me take a stand against the doctors strike. APOLOGIES.

But here is the thing folks. I am not against the strike because I don't think they have a cause. That would be foolish of me. Let me state here and now that I do AGREE 100% with their cause. Everyone is entitled to CONDITIONS OF SERVICE. I am however unapologetically against the strike METHOD.

I have a lot of RESPECT AND EVEN REVERENCE for doctors. It is not an exaggeration to say I worship them. On two occasions, I was near death and it took doctors to SAVE MY LIFE. The first time was in Korle Bu in 1974. The doctor said I was admitted about 12 hours earlier! Dr. Konotey Ahulu saved me from a near death situation in a horrible sickle cell crisis. The next one was Brooklyn where after a severe allergy my vital organs were shutting down, I was rushed to the Coney Island hospital doctors, saved me.That is the role of doctors FOR WHICH WE "WORSHIP" them. On many occasions they save lives! That is why everyone respects them. I am happy that my daughter is in Medical school training to be one.

It is for this same reason that I am against their strike. Please note, I am not against the REASONS for striking, I AM TOTALLY AGAINST THE METHOD. I think it is the height of HUMAN CRUELTY to sacrifice innocent lives for ANY REASON. I am sorry.

Listen folks, it is not easy to become a doctor, it is a very difficult path, AND TRUST ME when i say from the bottom of my heart that I respect them. But that is the more reason I believe that if they put their heads to it and really think, they are intelligent enough to think of several ways of getting the point across WITHOUT SACRIFICING HUMAN LIFE! That is my problem with this strike method. Call me ignorant and naive, but for Gods sake, you only have one life. It is precious and sacred. Yes no one will live forever but certain deaths with the help of DOCTORS ARE PREVENTABLE.

SACRIFICING INNOCENT HUMAN LIVES in pursuit of what you deserve GOES AGAINST THE VERY GRAIN OF EVERYTHING DOCTORS TRAIN FOR. It is the most easy and perhaps the most effective weapon, but my dear friends it is also the most cruel. I know there are many doctors, who feel the pain but think it is the best option. IT IS NOT THE BEST. IT IS THE EASIEST OPTION.

What options are open? I trust that THE DOCTORS have more intelligent and reasonable people than me who can come up with brilliant solutions much better that abandoning their posts and leaving the poor people who cannot afford private clinics to die. That is a VERY EASY BUT EXPENSIVE WAY!

There are other ways and methods to state your case more effectively than this. For what it is worth, I have a few ideas myself but that is for another forum if the need arises.

To conclude, I am not AGAINST what they are STRIKING FOR, I AM TOTALLY AGAINST their METHOD. Call me old school, but I belong to the age, where SAVING LIVES what a passion for Doctors. I belong to that old school age, where NO DOCTOR WOULD EVER ABANDON A PATIENT. I guess, things have changed. If some POLITICIANS CAN LIE, and some PASTORS can deceive why can't DOCTORS ABANDON patients.

WELCOME TO YOUR NEW WORLD

UPDATE: Ms Ada to be re-engaged after psychiatric treatment

A radio presenter with a Takoradi based local station, YFM, who was diagnosed of mental disorder, has been medically declared fit and recommended to be re-engaged by the employer, Global Media Alliance.
The Ghana Police Service are also to discontinue criminal prosecution levelled against Ms Adaeze Ayoka [Ms Ada], said Consultant Psychiatrist, Dr Yao Mfodwo, who took her through months of clinical counselling.
According to Dr Mfodwo; Ms Ada, changed her name from Naana Akosua Appiah Antwi to Adaeze Ayoka. “Ada response to treatment has been good, she maintained her compliance to treatment, and I declare her medically fit to work as normal,” Dr Mfodwo told journalists at a briefing to update them on developments of alleged kidnap and rape raised by Ms Ada early this year. “It has nothing to do with her intellectual ability to work, in this country we tend to gloss over disabilities,” he added.

Mr Mfodwo said interviews with the radio presenter and her parents based on her childhood, school history, sleep mood and communication pattern showed some fluctuating moods, unpredictable behaviours and delusions and she has now been certified normal. He said the presenter was frustrated by her long stay in the Police Hospital without being formally charged.
He explained the Police Hospital referred the patient to him in April after being admitted at the facility for an alleged rape incident. “Ada had very patchy recollections of the alleged rape incident, there was no documented record of drug or alcohol use associated with the alleged rape, there was also no medical report available to me to confirm or deny the alleged rape,” he said.

He congratulated the Global Media Alliance for standing by the employee throughout the period when Ms Ada has been “publicly vilified,” and urged corporate bodies to emulate the gesture.

''Kwaw Kese is Mad and I Don't Blame Him. I blame the Judge Who released Him Recently - Kontihene ''slaps'' Kwaw Kese

''Kwaw Kese is mad and l don't blame him. l blame the Judge who released him recently''. These strong words from Kontihene as a responds to Kwaw Kese calling him ''a dead artiste'' will surely spark a higher ''beef'' between these artistes.

Kontihene who was interviewed during Starr Entertainment News a segment on the program ''The Zone'' on Starr Fm was not pleased with the responds from Kwaw Kese as a reply to his interview with Pulse TV. In that interview, Kontihene said “The kind of songs that I do, Kwaw Kesse will be a wrong artiste to be on them because I record songs with content, he does not”.
In the same interview, Kontihene dismissed rumors there is a rift between himself and the rapper saying “it’s not that I have personal things against him but I don’t just invite any artiste to record with them.”

He continued that, “I’m still praying to see a content-filled song from Kwaw Kesse.”
that he (Kontihene) had said Kwaw Kese's music has not content.

The ''Aketeshie'' hitmaker who wasn't happy with the responds to his remarks said he never meant any harm with his comments but was rather referring to the kind of music they do as individuals. Kontihene says he is into doing evergreen songs and that Kwaw Kese doesn't qualify to be part of his projects.

In his responds to Kwaw Kese's reply claiming he (Kontihene) is a ''dead artiste'' who only want to ride on he (Kwaw Kese's) fame to return to the limelight, Kontihene spoke in an emotional tone and called Kwaw Kese a mad man.

"He is mad. His carrier is rather dead. Who recently shot a video lying in a casket?, he did. Who has his management team pass away, he has. So whose carrier is dead? Kwaw Kese is mad and l don't blame him. l blame the Judge who released him recently for him to come say these things to me. Its only a mad man who goes about smoking weed in public. Ghana's vocal sensation Dr. Knii Lante Blankson shoots Video for his song "Beautiful Virgo" after rejecting 3

Ghana's vocal sensation Dr. Knii Lante Blankson shoots Video for his song "Beautiful Virgo" after rejecting 3 that has already been shot because they didn't satisfy the "perfectionist" Musicologist.

It may sound weird but this is pure truth and signs of a "perfectionist" . Knii Lante the award winning vocalist has finally settled on a new set of rashes for his mellow , soothing song BEAUTIFUL VIRGO.
As someone who never compromises on quality, he decided to keep taking , as they say in the movie circles, shoot after shoot until finally settling on this new production.

A concept which will blow your mind was selected out of many and eventually shot in the outskirts of Accra. The production team were tasked to make this an international standard visual and quality.  It is no wonder that his previous production for House of pain and ................ Won awards at the VGMA 2012 and 2013 respectively.

Asked why his reasons for rejection of the previous takes were, , KniiLante lamented that its quite sad that some Ghanaian artists suffer to put resources together to come out with great songs and even music videos but yet struggle to make it to the likes of Mtv base, Trace ,  Chanel O and other international Audiovisual platforms.  He advised all of them including himself to take pains and strive to go the extra mile to come out with the best of production in both pictures and storyline/concepts.

He praised the musicians who are already enjoying these international airplay to not rest but to continue the revolution since this is Ghana's time.

Ghana’s Shirley Frimpong-Manso Opens Doors for Female Colleagues

Six years into a career that’s seen her emerge as the queen of the Ghanaian box office, Shirley Frimpong-Manso still remembers the African movies she used to watch growing up in Accra — and the way African women were depicted onscreen.
Typically portrayed as weak and submissive, they bore no resemblance to the American stars — “women wielding guns,” as the helmer says, with a laugh — who blazed their way through leading roles in Hollywood films.
More strikingly, they were nothing like the women she saw around her.
“I grew up in a totally different environment,” says the 38-year-old filmmaker, who explains that she was raised in a household run by “strong African women.” When Frimpong-Manso finally embarked on a career in cinema, she thought about how those portrayals were affecting young Ghanaian viewers, and made herself a promise. “It’s about time we change that image of the (African) woman,” she says.
Now, as Frimpong-Manso prepares for the upcoming release of her 11th feature, “Rebecca,” she can reflect on her career as an award-winning writer, producer and director whose reputation for casting forceful female leads has inspired a growing number of Ghanaian women to stake a claim in this male-dominated industry.

In recent years, A-list stars like Yvonne Nelson, Kafui Danku, Yvonne Okoro and Lydia Forson have started taking on bigger roles as helmers and producers. For many, that evolution hasn’t just meant giving women more power behind the scenes, but changing the way they’re portrayed onscreen in this conservative West African nation. “Being an actress and being a celebrity is just a platform,” says Forson, who last year released her first film, “A Letter From Adam,” in which she stars as a woman who finds love in an unexpected way. “You need to do something positive with it, to give a voice (to) those who don’t have a voice.”

Forson notes how women in Ghanaian movies have largely been cast in one-dimensional roles in which an actress only had to be a pretty, light-skinned and tall to land a part. But with a greater number of women behind the camera, more pics are being made from a woman’s point of view. According to Forson, “Female artists are being taken more seriously.”
That shift is palpable in Frimpong-Manso’s work, in which women aren’t simply seen as wives and homemakers, or as silent, suffering foils for male protagonists. In “Scorned,” the heroine is an abused housewife whose search for vengeance — and independence — turns the tables on more stereotypical plotlines. In “Life and Living It,” assertive women take center stage, like the brilliant young defense attorney fighting a custody battle, or the accomplished, middle-age businesswoman who buys a car for her younger lover — a shocking role reversal in a country where men are typically viewed as the breadwinners. According to Frimpong-Manso, it’s her goal “to show a woman (who) can have a job, a husband, a child, (and) can make decisions.”

Central to the filmmaker’s career has been her keen business acumen in the face of the movie industry’s struggles. Ghana’s colonial-era theaters have been shuttered for years, and today there is just a single multiplex servicing a population of 25 million. With the country continuing to suffer through a protracted economic decline, moviegoing is considered a luxury for most consumers. Even the DVD sales that are the lifeblood of West African filmmakers have taken a hit.
“Where we used to sell 100,000 copies within a few weeks of release, now you’re lucky to sell 5,000 copies,” Frimpong-Manso says.

One strategy has been to tap into the lucrative market of nearby Nigeria, where a population of 170 million — and a growing number of cinemas — offers a vital platform for Ghanaian pics. Another has been to go further afield, where Frimpong-Manso has found a growing market through television networks like South Africa’s M-Net, France’s Canal Plus and nets targeting black audiences, such as the Africa Channel in the U.S. and OH TV in the U.K.
“These are people who want African content,” she says. “Our stories need to be able to cut across (borders).”

Rita Marley named Woman Of Excellence in Africa

Rita Marley will be feted with a banquet at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Sept. 12 when the United Nations’ Women and the African Union Diaspora Africa Forum (AUDAF) toast their selection with the 2015 Living Legends and African Women of Excellence awards.
“To God be the glory,” she said after hearing about her honor.
“Whatever I do is not in vain. I know I’ve done hard work, and it was achieved by the work I do. I was not expecting this award.”
She is among a handful of prestigious women recognized as outstanding females of African descent representing a wide variety of disciplines ranging from entrepreneurs, artists, scientists to social activists.
The theme for this year’s celebration, “The UN at 70 – a new commitment to action,” will be a significant aspect of the ceremony to be marked during the 70th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The event pays tribute to two categories of achievers with presentations as Living Legends and Women of Excellence.
“I am honored to be counted amongst so many distinguished women who have previously received this award. I pray that I can continue helping to ensure that the aged are protected and that infants are cared for... according to our creed.”
Although her marriage in 1966 to Bob Marley, the king of reggae indelibly identifies her as his wife and the mother of their talented children and grandchildren the widow in her own right is deserving of the accolades showered on her due to her singing talent – first acknowledged with the Soulettes and later backing her husband as a member of the I-Three – and later establishing her own Rita Marley Music recording and publishing companies.
In addition, her persevering efforts to uplift the memory of her husband in a positive manner as well as the numerous monuments and memorials she enabled in his name, speaks volumes to her tireless pursuits.
Her entrepreneurial and philanthropic ability credits a home for teen-aged mothers in Kingston, Jamaica; book and back-pack back-to-school supplies to deprived youths throughout the island, an essay competition and several generous donations to the needy.
Born in Cuba, the ambitious, multi-talented, Africa-centered Caribbean native was raised in Trench Town, Kingston, Jamaica.
There she pursued a career as a nurse.
However, the path to a medical career was derailed by the allure of music and the Rastafarian movement, which to her both represented Africa and self-awareness.
Much of her transition from aspiring nurse to an early coronation as the Queen of Reggae is documented in her autobiography “No Woman No Cry,” — a title associated with a popular hit song recorded by her spouse.
Initially published in English and Spanish, the book is due to be translated in Swahili, German and French.
Harambe, her quarterly newsletters keeps readers informed on her activities as well as those associated with foundations and charities she has established.
Throughout her adult years living in Jamaica, she is acclaimed for juggling a myriad of humanitarian causes while raising her children and maintaining the legacy of her husband who died when she was 35 years old.
In 1993, she moved to Ghana, Africa. Soon after establishing a home, she aimed her efforts at providing improved health care to elders. She immediately toiled to improve the conditions there by opening a health care facility and was acknowledged by the local chiefs who renamed her Nana Afua Adobeya1.
In Africa she also ensured the building of a recording studio in the capital city of Accra.
Two years ago she was named honorary citizen of Ghana with the rights and a passport afforded all nationals. That dual citizenship was earlier extended to her in 2005, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where her husband’s 60th birthday celebration attracted a massive crowd in the city’s Meskel Square.
The free concert billed “Africa Unite” featured all her famous children as well as members of the I-Three and coincided with a day-long symposia, special events at the United Nations headquarters there and also a gala VIP ceremony which was held at the home/palace of HIM Emperor Haile Selassie I.
Since that time Marley has been widely regarded as an advocate for the construction of a dam in Ethiopia that could/would redirect the flow of the Nile River from its Ethiopian source to Egypt.
With a promise to maintain the legacy left by her legendary and iconic husband in Africa she decided to regale his birth, the following years in South Africa and Ghana.
In Kenya, her name is associated with advancing numerous projects that could benefit the population of the African nation.
And she has been previously honored in Malawi as a living legend.
Marley has supported a myriad of advancement projects throughout the continent.
Her philanthropic contributions vastly extend from the Caribbean to Africa and throughout the diaspora.
In Jamaica she was conferred with a doctorate degree from the University of the West Indies. In 1996, the government there also bestowed the Order of Distinction, the sixth in national honor from the country.
Conferred “upon citizens of Jamaica who have rendered outstanding and important services to Jamaica, or to distinguished citizens of a country other than Jamaica,” the high honor added to Marley’s singular contribution to Jamaica.
On hearing of the latest honor bestowed, the Marley matriarch said, “I am honored, happy and humbled to be considered for the AWEA...”
“I feel highly blessed to be recognized in the same category as those distinguished Black female leaders.”
Other recipients include Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sir leaf, Joyce Banda, former Malawi President, Ngina Kenyatta, the former First Lady of Kenya recently received the AWEA in South Africa in June during the African Union Summit.
The award was conceived as a platform to recognize women of Africa, and of African descent, who have contributed to the struggle for political, social and economic independence at various levels, with excellence.
In commenting she encouraged Jamaican women, those throughout the Caribbean and Africa, to engage in positive works to uplift and motivate people.
Ambassador Erieka Bennett, Head of Mission for Africa Union Diaspora Africa Forum said:
“Our objective is to recognize and award women of African descent for their outstanding contributions to the struggle for freedom, development and peace in social, political and economic spheres and assures their commitment to providing this platform which not only celebrates but encourages other women to succeed in myriad professions and activities.”
Marley recently celebrated her 69th birthday in Nassau, Bahamas.
At her second Caribbean home away from Jamaica, family and friends joined in wishing her continued good health and mostly complimented her on being named the recipient of the distinguished award.
Marley claims 12children – those she birthed as well as her husband’s by other women — more than 60 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Rockstone partners SUBA to become one of Africa’s first celebrity tech innovators

Legendary Ghanaian music artiste and founder of Hip-life, Reggie Rockstone has sealed an investment partnership with Suba, the event based group photo-sharing app to become one of Africa’s first celebrity tech investors.

The entertainment entrepreneur will utilize his extensive fan base, social media following and industry network as a platform to generate exposure for the startup which launched in Ghana last September and has been identified as one of the Top 10 Best Apps from Africa.

“I am very engaged on social media and sharing photos digitally have become an integral part of mine and many people’s everyday lives. When I was first introduced to Suba I was very excited to know that it had been developed by young Ghanaians; a product with the potential to be adopted by people all over the world.

“I am always seeking innovative business opportunities and feel technology is the future so it was an easy decision to become an investment partner in Suba,” says Rockstone who owns a popular lounge/bar/club with a weekly photo sharing trend on social media (insta twitter)
Suba is available for web, iOS and Android and allows users at social gatherings and in groups to see and share photos in one central album making photos easily accessible and shareable by everyone at the event in real-time.

Suba has been used by event organizers around the world to manage photo sharing including the Oxford University Africa Innovate Conference (UK), Meltwater Corporate Kickoff (Miami,USA), Mobile West Africa (Nigeria), and Chale Wote Street Arts Festival (Ghana).

“We are huge fans of Reggie and admire how he has managed to build and maintain his brand for over 20 years which is very rare for an artist. We believe having Reggie has a partner and leveraging the power of his celebrity and the entertainment industry will catapult Suba to the next level,” says Nelson Klutse, one of West Africa’s’ leading iOS developers who co-founded the company with fellow technologist, Eric Hackman at the Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST) Incubator in 2014.

With this partnership, Rockstone is on the path of international artists such as Bono, Jessica Alba, Nas, and Ashton Kutcher who have successfully invested in tech startups that have since become household names including Facebook, Skype, and Square.

“Africa is now being considered the "mobile continent" with internet use on mobile phones being predicted to increase double the rate of growth in the rest of the world. This is a huge opportunity for Suba and yes we’re shooting for the global market but a major focus for us will be to become the “Instagram” of Africa that is locally owned which will definitely serve as inspiration to a generation of young people and aspiring entrepreneurs,” adds Rockstone who will formally announce his investment partnership with Suba on 19th August at a press conference in Accra at the La Villa Boutique Hotel.
